Big Buck Winery

It Starts with the Hunt

for a Good Wine

What does an old farmer do once he is retired? He starts to gather all the fruits that grow on his farm and he starts to make wine. At least that is how the founder of Big Buck Winery explains how his hobby started and evolved into a premiere Wisconsin winery.

It didn’t take long for the popularity of the wine that was once made in the basement of an old farm house to gain a following. This community began a journey that took this hobby into a full-time career.

Knowing when elderberries, blackberries, apples, blueberries were ripe for harvest allowed for a busy wine making season. After two years of making wine with a variety of fruit, grapes were added to the crops for an added selection.

Join us for a tasting and stay for a tour. We love to share our former dairy farm, now vineyard, with guests.

Join us for our wine tastings today!

Our tasting room is open year-round!

We only close for one week in November for hunting season & Christmas day.

A Wine for Every Season

Our Wines

Our Process

  1. Harvesting
  2. Crushing
  3. Fermentation
  4. Clarification
  5. Aging and Bottling

We harvest our own berries and grapes for our variety of wine we make and serve at Big Buck Winery.

It all begins with planting season in the spring. We nurture the plants throughout the seasons.  We work with our team starting in the spring preparing the soil for planting season that starts in April and goes through May.

By late summer we are busy harvesting berries and grapes with great care. Our team takes great pride in what we produce and strive to make sure only the best fruits go into our wines.

The crushing process is done with a lot of vibrant energy. This process is the next stage in our wine making. We put a lot of pride in each process to ensure our guests receive the best quality wine we can produce.

If you want to see how our wines are made, we welcome you to take in our process by our viewing window. Everyone is welcome to watch how we make our wine from start to finish.

Big Buck Winery started as a hobby and grew into a wildly popular spot for those with a love for the northwoods. Join us for a tasting or come and stay for the weekend.
We also have special events and would love to have you join us for our music or dinner series. Learn more about our events in our blog.

Welcome to Big Buck Winery

When you want a quiet escape in the woods, turn to Big Buck winery. Cozily nestled in the Northwoods surrounded by trees and lakes, this is the perfect get-away for those who love the outdoors.

Want to expand your experience? Buy a bottle of wine and enjoy your selection in a hand-made deer stand. No manufactured deer stands here! Our deep stands are hand crafted by local hunters each with their own stumps for chairs. Every stand has their own unique table that was cut from a tree our ‘on staff lumberjacks’ found in the woods.

We offer more than just one deer stand wine experience. Want to get off leash and really enjoy the outdoors? To enjoy a more primitive stay we suggest staying in our camp area. You will be surrounded by two-ply toilet paper so no need to pack your own.

Bring your trail mix to the tasting room and we will help pair your selection with the perfect wine. With our primitive sites you can enjoy supper right after you catch it in our pond. If you can catch Whiskey the Walleye or Bucky the Bass, we will give you a free bottle of wine! Those two have been enticing and eluding anglers for years. (Please do not ask to use dynamite to fish in our pond).

Any-hoo, we look forward to having you join us for some wine in the woods!

Farm-to-Table at Big Buck Winery

We are hosting events and we are excited to announce music in the woods weekends, fish-fry Sundays (because why only have fish on Fridays?) and a dinner series.

We will kick off our event season with our own Farm-to-Table dining experience. We wrangled up local chef, Andy to help make this event extra special. Andy has planned a delightful three course meal and we are excited to have you join us for this delicious evening.

Our meal with start with fresh cheese curds served with our dandelion wine. The milk used in these cheese curds are from a local dairy farmer. Dandelions for the wine were picked from the pastures of farms in the surrounding area. The cheese curds and dandelion wine are perfectly paired for a Midwest summer evening and will tantalize your tastebuds.

For the main meal only the finest cuts of venison will be paired with our Elderberry wine. Our elderberries are picked from the big woods on the back of our property. Our Elderberry wine is our number one favorite as it has been shown that elderberry wine has historically been used as a tonic and treatment for a variety of health problems. With our lean cuts of venison tied in with fresh picked baby red potatoes and carrots from our garden, matched with our Elderberry wine, you can be sure to enjoy this delightful course.

To finish off this three-course meal, you will enjoy a hearty serving of apple cobbler, with ice cream and your choice of apple or peach wine. Our ice cream is freshly churned by one of our retired dairy cows, Jingle. You will have the opportunity to watch her walk on a specialized treadmill made by the Amish that will churn milk into ice cream.

This event will leave you saying, “Jeepers, that was good!” Tickets are already selling quicker than season passes to a Packers game so don’t delay on getting yours today.

Wine Tastings at Big Buck Winery

We love having guests come visit us and experience our variety of wines. We offer a nice selection that will suit everyone’s needs.

Just like there are different hunting and fishing seasons, we have a wine for everyone.

Our Dandelion wine is popular with summer anglers. With its light and crisp appeal it has a buttery finish. Its sweetness is not over powering making a delightful summer wine as it floats across the palette. It is perfect for a good or bad day of fishing. But, let’s be honest, is there every a bad day of fishing?

The Elderberry wine is our number one selling wine. This is a favorite among all, but especially bow hunters/ This wine is perfect for all occasions. But, we find bow hunters enjoy it after sitting in a the stand all day. It helps to take the sting out of that missed shot. It also has the perfect alcohol content to help celebrate a good day in the woods.

No matter what happens at work or at play, this is the best wine to help end the day right.

Blackberry wine is quite popular with the more rugged deer hunters. When their day doesn’t go well, they need a hearty wine to help calm their nerves. This is a sweet wine but holds a hefty kick. This wine is as dense as it is flamboyant and is not for just anyone. This is a wine that can hold its own like Aaron Rogers in the final seconds of the 4th quarter.

In our variety of wines, we also offer a Cranberry wine. This wine is not for the faint of heart. But, neither are the ice fishing patrons who love this wine. Like someone who can sit on six feet of ice all day waiting for a fish that will never bite, this needs someone with some grit. A mix of laser-like sour with a blend of sweet offers a unique structure that desires someone who can handle something so bold.

When you experience our Cranberry wine it starts off tart and leaves you with a sweet finish. This wine isn’t for just anyone, but neither is ice fishing. With a higher alcohol content it will warm you up after a long day being out on the ice.

This is just a small sample of the wines we have available for tasting and for you to take home. We would love to have you come by and try our selection of Big Buck Wines.

We are open from 11:00am – 8:00pm Monday through Sunday. We are open year round except for one week in November for deer hunting and Christmas day.
