Doggy Diaries

I love dogs, I love everything about them. They simply make life better.

Dogs help to enhance our lives with their natural born gift of their endless love they have to give.

Here is where I share their stories, from dog rescues, to dogs who need to be rescued. This is an open platform to share the stories, the life and love of dogs in all capacities. I hope you will join me on this journey about the dogs in this world who want what we all desire, to be loved.

Doggy Date

Harley

The Nashville Humane Society has started a brilliant new program that allows for day long doggy dates.

Instantly I signed up as this sounded like heave. Today I was fortunate and blessed to go on a doggy date, and to my surprise, I got to pick out my dog! I picked out an older black lab mix named, Harley.

Harley asked if she could write something for my doggy diaries page – so ladies and gentleman, here is Harley telling you about her doggy date!

Hello,

My name is Harley. I use to live in Florida, but I ended up at a Humane Society and no one wanted me. The people in Florida loaded me up and sent me to where I live now a place called Nashville? I miss my home, my family, and I’m having a hard time adjusting to this new place people call Tennessee.

But, today, I got to meet a new friend. This lady named Erica at the Nashville Humane Society told me I had a doggy date. I was not sure what this meant, but this lady with brown hair in braids, and blue eyes took me out for an adventure! I couldn’t believe it when we walked through the front doors, it was so exciting!

I am a little older and she had to help me get into her car, but she sweetly hoisted up my back leg and let me take over once I had my bearings. Her car was a little small for me, but she kept telling me I was good and petted me. Once we got out of the parking lot she rolled down the window, oh! the fresh air! It was wonderful. It has been a long time since I got to stick my face out a moving vehicle!

We rode through traffic and I struggled to get comfortable in the tiny front seat. The lady kept telling me we would be at a park soon, and everything would be okay.

She was right! We got into a parking lot, and she came and opened my door and WOW! There were things to smell, things to see and people who wanted to pet me. This was my most favorite day since being at this new facility. We walked around and looked at the water, the lady let me go to the edge and look at it for a minute. I wanted to jump in, it looked like fun, but I did not know if I could get back out. She took me around the park and we would stop and talk to people, I would try to be adorable so maybe they would want to take me home.

Then the lady took me to a statue at this park with these wonderful women carrying signs. She told me a little bit about them and I began to bark! I was excited to see empowered women standing in front of me! It was really exciting and I wanted to tell them I was proud to be a female too!

We continued around the park, we would stop and look around. The lady kept trying to get me to sit. I don’t think she understands, I am a little older and there is a lot in my back end to negotiate a ‘sit’ command. But, she kept being patient as she asked me and I wanted to show her I do know how to sit, it just takes me a little bit.

The lady also kept telling me how she was impressed with my leash skills. Of course I know how to behave on a leash! This isn’t my first day as a dog! But, I guess she needed me to be patient with her too, because maybe she did not know of my fine training I once had many years ago.

After a couple stops for water, looking at a flower garden it began to rain. I was surprised, I didn’t know what it was at first. It was wonderful to be a dog and be outside in the rain. We went and walked under some trees until it let up with the rain. This was very exciting because there were squirrels and I got to chase them a little bit. But, my leash was only so long and they got high up in the tree where I could not reach them. The lady on my doggy date gave me some more water and then we made our way back to her car. I really tried to get in by myself, but she had to help me hoist all of me and my fur back into the front seat.

This was a fun day. I got to see a beautiful park, I was loved on by strangers and it gave my heart hope, I can have a forever home soon here in Tennessee.

Bella and Teke

Bella is a 14 year old chocolate lab, Teke is her best friend, a light brown cat. Together they support one another. These two pals live in west Nashville and I came across this story from a friend of the family who was pet sitting.

Bella began to lose her sight until she was completely blind. Teke stepped up to the plate and became Bella’s eyes for her. Teke will guide Bella around the house by walking in front of her, next to her and will ‘meow’ when Bella gets off track. They snuggle together, they sleep together they are truly best friends. Thanks to Teke, Bella is able to function with her disability and continue to live a full life.

We all would be lucky to have a Teke in our lives. What an incredible blessing that Teke has the know-how to help her canine friend. This allows Bella to be able to live her life as a dog. It is difficult enough when a human, who can grasp the concept of losing their sight, goes through the process. It must be a scary feeling when a dog who cannot understand like a human can begins to watch the world around it fade away. For Teke to figure out what was happening with Bella and on her own begin to take the steps to help her is nothing but amazing.

With loving, supportive, caring friends and family anything can be overcome.

Louisa

UPDATE: As of August 15, 2018 – Louisa has found her forever home.

ADOPTED

It is an all too familiar story of neglect that is seen and heard more than necessary. Yet, it is a reality that exists in our neighborhoods and communities. Thank goodness for the good people in the world who are able to take in these amazing critters and open their homes and hearts to them.

Kate Stiller is one of those kind hearted people who made a post on a Facebook group I belong to about this sweet and beautiful dog she found with a friend. She wrote how this dog was found tied up to bushes behind a house in East Nashville, Tenn.

With a harness was nearly embedded into her skin under her arms. She was found without food, water or any kind of shelter in 90 plus degree weather of high humidity in middle Tennessee. The two friends knocked on the former owners door and inquired about the dog. They replied with, “Do you want her?” that answer was yes and she went into the loving arms of Kate and her friend. They took this sweet girl to the vet, got her on some antibiotics and put her into the e-collar to keep her from making her wounds worse.

The kind woman who rescued this loving dog works as a veterinary technician, and she is currently trying to find a new home for this beautiful girl.

Interested? Contact me and I will get you in touch with her.

This is what we know about Louisa: she is spayed, vaccinated and mirochipped Pitbull. She seems to be house broken, but may need some guidance once in her forever home. She is estimated to be around six months old. She is curious about other dogs, Kate is working with Louisa on her chasing cat habit, but she is scared of pigs. Can you blame her? They can be scary!

This sweet girl would love to have a forever home and share her world of love that resides in her heart.
