As a resident of Nashville, Tenn., I am saddened by the growth of the city. The changes taking place between rent increasing (in 2022 rent went up between $200-$600 a month). Traffic causing issues and transplants coming into the area and acting as though they own the place is incredibly frustrating.

Yet, people keep coming.

Here are a few pieces of advice from a local IF you decide to move to Nashville.

Please do not make references to the rent as though it is not an issue. There are people who have lived there their entire lives and being harassed by developers to sell their property. Their adult kids cannot afford to live there and families that once could walk to relative’s house now have a 45-minute commute. People who have lived there for over ten years who call this place home are struggling to find an affordable place to rent. They are being forced to get two or three jobs to afford rent that continues to go up year after year. Residents are also being forced into finding other housing when their landlord decides to sell the property that had been called home.

The Nations

Be understanding that the increase of population has caused issues for people who call Nashville home. Sure, one can say it is progress, but it is also creating more homeless issues and financial strain that once did not exist five years ago.

As far as traffic, if you see someone needs to come into your lane, please let them in. Road rage has increased in the city due to transplants who are refusing to allow other drivers into their lane. If someone lets you in, give them a friendly wave whether so the car behind you can see through your rear window or you roll down your window. Nashville is about community and supporting one another. It is not a cut throat city. You are in the south and southern hospitality is very real. If you give a little, you will get a little.

Be friendly. You probably want to move to Nashville because people are so friendly. You are responsible to help continue that friendliness to others. This is a very big thing in Nashville and it is important it is carried on for future generations.

Get involved. If you don’t have time, then give with your pocket. If you don’t have a lot in your pocket to give, then give with your time. Tennessee is the Volunteer state. It is important to give to a cause you care about as a resident in Tennessee. Now, according to: https://tennesseehistory.org/volunteer-state/ …”Tennessee became known as the “Volunteer State” during the War of 1812 due to the key role played by volunteers from the Tennessee militia. Newspapers of the day touted the military spirit of the men of Tennessee.

Regardless of how it began, the important thing to keep in mind if you want to be a resident of Tennessee is to get involved with a cause that means something to you. It will help you get to know incredible people who are working hard to improve the community in which they reside.

Moving to Nashville or any city in Tennessee is more about than taking in the events and music. It is about working to become a part of the community. It takes about six years of working to be involved and kind to people to start being a local. It doesn’t happen overnight. Being a part of Nashville is more than paying rent, taxes and attending events. It is about helping a community that is based around kindness, being friendly and getting involved.
